ST. MARTIN’S HOUSE OF HELP
WINTER APPEAL During the last six weeks of cold winds and frequent rains, one thinks of the old folk and their needs, especially of the lonely ones bereft by death of relatives and old-time friends. Loneliness is hard; but is worse when clothing and other needs cannot be got to supply some of the comfort that old age requires. Lately a good, warm, wellmade overcoat such as an old man needs, cost (at the then cheapest price) 127/6. Women’s coats were at equivalent prices. How many old age pensioners could buy one when their 32/6 a week has to provide rent. food, light, heating, and clothes? Rents of room's used to be from 5/to 8/- a week: they now range from 9/to 15/-. If the lower rates of Social Security Benefits were raised I wonder how much further the rents of rooms for these old folk would be raised? We are helping separated wives with children when maintenance does not come in. We help to get ex-prisoners back into work and respectability. Sick folk come to us when desperate. These are the kind of cases that come to us. We check up on all and prevent overlapping. Will you help us to help them by sending a donation to the Rev. P. Revell, 199 Antigua street, and donations will be acknowledged in “The Press” -8
