WEEK-END WORK ON WHARVES

AUCKLAND UNION'S DECISIONS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 12. Auckland waterside workers again resolved at a stopwork meeting today that they would not work on Saturday afternoons, and the decision will come into effect this week-end. Other resolutions were that they would work night shifts and pn Sundays only on overseas food ships loading for the United Kingdom, and during the present emergency, on coal ships. There would be no night shift, Saturday afternoon or Sunday work on American vessels, and the union would reconsider in two months' time the abolition of Sunday and night shift work. In cases of emergency employers could apply to the local union, executive for permission to work ships. fhe union's stopwork meeting is usually held on the second Wednesday of the month, but was convened to-day as the president of the Auckland branch and of the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Union (Mr H. Barnes) will leave by flying-boat to-morrow morning for Sydney, where this week he will attend jthe Australian Trade Union Congress, and next week a meeting of the national council of the Waterside Workers' Federation. It is believed that the resolutions passed in Auckland to-day will be put to stopwork meetings of waterside workers at other ports in New Zealand to-morrow. "The Waterfront Control Commission is aware of the resolutions," sajd the chairman, Captain R. E. Price, who is in Auckland, to-night. "The shipping urgency still exists, and I will be travelling back to Wellington to discuss the matter with my fellow The commission is the only authority with the right to determine the urgency of vessels with the information it receives.'' Last month a national decision to cease working on Saturday afternoons was made by waterside workers, but only one afternoon was affected, the union then deciding to resume working on Saturday afternoons.
