The Army forwards, led by Smith and Fitzgerald, slowly gained ground, and evened the score with a penalty kick by Deyell. After fast and exciting forward play. Army penetrated the Marist defences, and Deyell kicked another penalty goal, bringing the halftime score to 8-3. Army played on the defence after the interval, but a fast Marist back movement resulted'm S. Callanan scoring a try after an elusive dash. Fierce Marist attacks followed in quick succession, but failed to break the solid Army defence, of which Howley and .McHugh bore the brunt. The game ended with the score 6 points each, Marist (a penalty goal and a try), Army (two penalty goals). Mr D. B. Brown was referee. HAREWOOD STILL UNBEATEN With a score of 14-8, Harewood beat Mcrivale'at Rugby Park In a hard-fought game of good standard, considering the conditions. Play was mainly confined to the forwards during the first half, although Pitama, the bulky Merivale fullback, had a fair amount of work to do. Merivale opened the scoring with a forward rush, which resulted in a try by Drummond, 'this was converted by Pitama. At this stage, Merivale appeared to be the stronger team, and easily held Harewood in check. King, for Harewood, kicked a penalty goal, and from then on the team played with greater spirit. Jones and Inder made dashes lor the line without material result, but Whitmore succeeded in crossing. The half-time score was Harewood 6, Merivale 5. Scrums became ragged during the second half, and Pitaina, a rock of defencein the first half, lost much of his dash. Harewood marked die spell with an exciting try. Jones Intercepting a crosskick. and with Inder in support he outran the Merivale backs. He passed to Inder, who went through unhindered, scoring between the posts. King converted. Pitama kicked a penalty goal for Merivale. The game was finally decided for Harewood wfth a hard-fought try by Longville. The final score -was Harewood 14 points (a goal from a try. a penalty goal, and two tries), Merivale 8 points (a goal from a try and a penalty goal). Mr F. B. Thompson was referee. A SCORELESS DRAW In a game that was mainly confined to the forwards. Sydenham and Christchurch failed to score. In the first half of the game Christchurch played with the wind and had Sydenham defending hard for a period. Hie Christchurch forwards all through the game packed more compactly than their opponents, and Sydenham's last line of defence, J. Hattersley, was called on for hard defence. He gave a really good display. Christchurch was unlucky In the second half, when the half-back, Henderson, ducked round a scrum and finshed only Inches short of the line. In the tackle he was injured and had to leave the field. Mr W. Oliver was referee.
