RIVER PROTECTION WORK JW&USSED ' In a reply received by the Springs County Council, at Its monthly meeting, to a' request for protective arork tone done in theSelwyn riverbed.the North Canterbury Catchment> Board stated- that itiyraa not in a positiod to; undertake remedialworks, as the only rate levied' was one for administrative purposes, includinginvestigations and surveys. Nothing could be done pending the completion of the survey wont on the river. ’ Referring to-a survey,;of the “14” and “L2” rivers, which the Catchment Board had undertaken recently," Cr. B. J. Stalker said that the survey of the Selwyn river was nearly completed although the council had made a prior for the “U" and survey; and that there had been gene-' ral agreement that tois survey should receive priority. It was agreed to write to toe board asking what its intentions were about the work. Reference was made to dangerous corners bn road intersections, It was stated that in city arehs toe local bodies had power to order owners to round oil corners considered dangerous, when such properties were sold. Cr. Stalker contended that county councils should have toe same powers. It was decided to send a remit on the subject to too next conference of toe Counties’ Association. The’chairman (Mr P. V. Bailey) and Mr A. E. Payne were appointed delegates to the forthcoming conference of the Counties’ Association.
