AMATEUR SPORTS CLUB
■ ANNUAL MEETING HELD "Boxing in Christchurch has been killed oy the high prices charged for admission to the different tournaments," said Mr A. Thompson at ihe annual 1 meeting of the Christchurch Amateur Boxing and Sports Club last week. Mr Thompson said that many of the keenest enthusiasts would not pay, and many others could not aflord to pay, prices up to a guinea to see crack amateurs and second-rate professionals. This view was supported by -Mr E. Gas-; son, who said that many young fellows had only to learn of the high prices being charged to lose all Interest. The one object in the meantime should be to : keep the prices of admission down, and for the good of boxing it was better to see a packed hall at one shilling, a head than a quarter of the crowd at twice the money. All sport was built on popularity, and the public must be encouraged. The question of arranging bouts and fixing prices was left in the bands of the committee. The annual report said that in accordance with the policy adbpted at the outbreak of war the association bad refrained from promoting boxing contests, but had assisted in securing permits tor secondary schools and patriotic bodies. The balance-sheet showed an excess o£ income over expenditure of £4 Is 7d. The following officers were elected!— president. Mr A. R Harris; committee, Messrs .A. Thompson, S. Oates, H. Gunn, p C. Crooke. E. Gasson. R. J. MeAleer. G. Miicdtt, F. Thompson. W. Moloney, and CsajW Oewft. A surgeon at ItMlpillirW - ; ill iln ml that ‘died' -after bombs.—.
