RECEPTION TO DIPLOMATS
MR NASH’S TRIBUTE TO RUSSIA
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 18. Diplomatic and consular representatives of the United Nations were guests at a reception given in their honour to-day by the Acting-Prime Minister (the Hon, W. Nash). Mr Nash said he questioned whether at any time in the history of the world a number of nations fighting together had worked together in such harmony. The job they had to do now was to live together without fighting one another. Mr Nash then referred briefly to the contributions of the United Nations to the common war effort. He said that it would have given great pleasure to have had present a representative of Russia. New Zealand had a Minister in Russia, and would be glad to have one from that country here. Sometimes the Russians misunderstood us, and we misunderstood them, but there would not be peace or a decent organisation for world security unless Russia was in it. He hoped they would understand Russia ana she would understand us. Replies were made by the Hon. K. S. Patton (United States), Mr Wang Feng (China), Mr M. F. Vigeveno (the Netherlands). Mr J. Halligan (Norway), Mr T. E. Y. Seddon (Greece), Mr C. A. L. Treadwell (Brazil), Mr C. J. Hyams (Czechoslovakia), the Hon. T. G. D’Alton (Australia). Dtf A. W. Riddell (Canada), and Sir Barry Batterbee (the United Kingdom).
