TRAINING CENTRE FOR SOLDIERS

INSPECTION BY LEAGUE OFFICERS POSSIBILITY OF USE ' BEFORE COMPLETION The possibility of using some part of the vocational training centre on Riccarton road before the building is finished was discussed yesterday when officers of the Christchurch branch of the Disabled Servicemen’s Re-cstab-lishraent League visited the centre. The heating installation is holding up completion of the building, but it was suggested that it might be possible to use some of the workshops when the weather became warmer, possibly about October. The league representatives, in discussion with officers of the Public Works Department and the contractors, pointed out that there were now men waiting to go into the centre for training. They asked if the workshops could be ready by the warmer weather, and it was agreed that probably the two workshop wings would be suitable for occupation then. A contract was let last week for the

heating installation, but because of the difficulty of getting a suitable boiler it may not be finished for another six months. However, the pipes can be put in before then and the building work finished in the main parts of the centre. The league’s officers looked sight through the building, which is now well advanced and is roofed, except for a small section where there was a delay for some long timbers. These have now arrived. They saw the workshops, recreation room, cafeteria, limb section (in which artificial limbs will be made and fitted), with Us walking race, swimming nool (which is also the water supply for fire fighting), and bathhouse, as well as other departments and outbuildings. It was emphasised again that the centre was riot to be a factory, and that the measure of its success would be the speed with which disabled men could be trained to take their part in ordinary life. After these men have been trained the centre mav then be used by those whose disabilities will prevent them from working in normal circumstances.
