Fierce battles are raging at the north-eastern, eastern, and south-eastern approaches, According to the Germans the nearest point to Berlin reached by the Russians is Proetzel, on one of the main roads leading into the capital. To-day’s German communique reports that a tense situation has arisen at Muncheberg, 22 miles east of Berlin, where strong Russian forces made gains to tire south-west and south. The German Telegraph Service re-, ports that elements of the central reserve pool have been thrown in to strengthen Berlin’s defences. On the Neisse front the Germans say that Russian spearheads are 10 miles from Bautzen and 26 miles from Dresden. "Russian dispatches from the front north-east, east, and southeast of Berlin to-day continued to describe the operation as a drive rather than an offensive," reports the Associated Press correspondent in Moscow. “They Intimated that the battle is growing In fury and intensity as troops push deeper "into the heart of Germany, encountering fanatical resistance at every yard.*—London, April 20.
