ENEMY AGENTS
INFLUX INTO ITALY SECURITY SECTION’S TASK “The Press Special Service AUCKLAND, April 10. “It is not generally known that 'Ger-' many, has been pouring hundreds of agents through bur lines during the campaign in Italy," said Captain F. E. McCallum, in an address to the-Auck-land Rotary Club on Monday. Captain McCallum was the officer in charge’.of the field security section with the' New; Zealand Division in. Italy, and the talk dealt mainly with his experiences on that country. It was part of the security section’s work to counter this influx of enemy agents, said Captain McCallum, and to do this it was necessary ]to maintain many contacts. A great many of the: agents had been captured, and thespeaker remembered being .withan armed parly : which awaited the arrival of ’five enemy parachutists at five o’clock one morning. ... “Many of Jthe enemy agents were youths, and there were some, women,’’ continued Captain McCallum. “About 85 per cent, of them were Italians. So although Italy is classed as a . cobelligerent, it. will be seen that there are still many people in Italy who continue to favour the Axis.” Captain McCallum said that the security ‘ section had also to deal with sabotage and to prevent the dissemination Of enemy propaganda, There was one occasion when. a. charge of explosive was laid under a railway line just before a train filled with troops travelled over the line. Fortunately, the work had been inexpertly performed, and the weight of the train was insufficient to set off the charge.
