TREATMENT OF MILK
CONTROL BY LOCAL AUTHORITY « MUNICIPAL SUPPLY NOT INVOLVED ” Although the Central Milk Council has expressed the opinion that milk treatment plants in the main centres should be taken over by the local milk authorities, this does not necessarily involve the introduction of a municipal milk supply for Christchurch, said the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) yesterday. The City Council, which has asked that it should be constituted, with representatives of outside local bodies, as the milk authority for Christchurch, has been advised by the central council's decision on this question of policy. . "Even if the authority did provide a receiving depot, it should be remembered that treatment covers' a wide field, including chilling, testing, and bottling, as well as pasteurising,” said Mr Andrews. “Raw milk is included in treatment, without pasteurisation.
“If such a central depot were established the authority would have control of all the milk distributed, whether to other companies or to vendors, and would thus be in a position to ensure that full-standard milk was being received by the consumer." Mr Andrews added that, as he had stated in answer to a correspondent of “The Press" yesterday, the City Council still stood, emphatically for the right of choice by the consumer of raw or pasteurised milk.
