FARMERS’ UNION
BANKS PENINSULA BRANCH The president (Mr R. Bruce) -was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the Banks Peninsula branch of the Farmers Union, held at Duvauchele on Friday. Advice was received from the provincial executive about the farm training scheme for the rehabilitation of servicemen. A list of farmers willing to take trainees under the conditions of the scheme should .be forwarded and also the names of those willing to give sheep dogs, stated the letter. , ■ , , The president said the scheme extended over a two-year period for men who had previously had no experience on farms, and for a shorter period for those who had farming experience. He had consulted the Banks Peninsula branch of the Returned Services’ Association and found that only one farmer in the district had definitely offered to take a trainee. He thought members should assist the scheme as far as possible. The chief difficulty seemed to be housing, especially where servicemen were married, and the extra work in the house for farmers’ wives where single men were employed. It was decided to support the scheme and assist the Returned Services Association in its endeavour to place trainees in the district.
Goods Transport Control . A letter was received from the Commissioner of Transport (Mr G. L. Laurenson) stating that he had asked the secretary of the Akaroa Goods Transport Control Committee to obtain nominations for local representation of stock firms and freezing companies as agreed to by the Hon. J. O'Brien, Minister of Transport, but apparently he had not been successful in obtaining nominations. He therefore would be glad to have any nominations the branch cared to make. at was decided to nominate Mr J. Mortlock as the freezing company’s representative and Mr C. J. Cradock as the stock firms’ representative. The president reported that he had attended a meeting of the Akaroa County Council, at which transport in the district had been discussed, and also the constitution of the Akaroa Goods Transport Control Committee. On the motion of the chairman it was decided that application should be made for a freight schedule for Banks Penman replv to the branch’s applied ion for a lorry to cart stock to the Addington market from Akaroa and the Eastern Bays, advice was received from the -/is-; triet 'Transport Officer (Mr J. f. Haywood) that the Transport Authority .would agree to the grant of the required temporary goods service licence. P™" vided the farmers were in a position m guarantee full mixed loads each way. Consideration •of the letter was deferred. ■
