SUPPLIES FOR UNRRA
* . AREA OFFICER IN DOMINION (P.A.) AUCKLAND, February 27. To arrange for" th£ purchase of supplies of a wide Variety of goods from New Zealand for UNRRA requirements and to Wake a comprehensive survey of the Dominion's supply position. Dr. Walter A. Chudson, deputy-chief for requirement and supply at. the south-west Pacific area office of UNRRA at Sydhey, arrived by flying-boat, this afternoon. He indicated that the requirements 6f liberated countries would be so great that New Zealand, among other countries, would have to make sacrifices such as rationing of food and clothing for some time after the end of the war. Dr. Chudson was met on his arrival by Mr W. J. Bowden, head of the Auckland branch of the Department of Industries and Commerce, who represented the Government, and Mr Hiram Boucher, United States Consul at Auckland. He will leave by air for Wellington to-mortoW morning to hold discussions with representatives of Various Government departments‘and Will be in the Dominion for spme Weeks. ' , Only 31 years of age, Dr. Chudson brings a background of an impressive scholastic record to his important post. After taking degree as doctor of economics at Columbia University, New York, he studied for three years at Oxford University as a Rhodes scholar, continuing his study of economics, which he has followed for the last 10 years. Dr. Chudson taught this subject at Columbia University. He then took up a position with the State Department at Washington ana has been associated With UNRRA Since its inception in 1943. -
