SHORTAGE OP TRADESMEN REPORTED DECISIONS OP ARMED . ° FORCES BOARD The shortage of bakers was so acute that the Wheat Research Institute intended to establish a school for bakers as soon as sufficient men desiring to learn the trade returned from - overseas, said Mr Q. H. Thomas, secretary of.. Stacey and Hawker, Ltd., when he appeared before the Armed Forces Appeal. Board yesterday in support of appeals for six of the firm’s employees. Since the war began, 176 bakeries in New Zealand had been forced to close down, said Mr Thomas, adding that it was practically impossible to obtain Additional trained staff. The board granted sine die adjournments in the cases of C,'Hoxman, M. Hoxman, W. T. Williams,,J. E. Williams, bakers, and R. F, Wallace, maintenance man; and adjourned the appeal for W. E. Law, baker, single, for a month. Other decisions'on appeals were: Pannell and Company, Ltd., for. G. W. Wad-; dington, bootmaker, adjourned sine die; L. S Killick, plumber, adjourned for review In three months; Flutes. Ltd., for R. C.. Findlay, curer,. adjourned sine ¥ die; Canterbury Auto Electric, Ltd., for Clapham, electrician, dismissed; Christchurch Dairy Company for J. Mackay, dairy hand, release from Air Force recommended; Auto Engineers, Ltd., for R. Spencer, engineer, dismissed; M« A. Scandrett. for M. A. Scandrett, trawler master, release from Navy recommended; Mrs , Grant ■ for _P. M. Grant, soldier, recommended that his service'be confined-to New .Zealand; G. H. Glover, for R. Sutherland, baker, adjourned sine die; F. Smedley, for J. H. Smedley, baker, adjourned sine die; J. T. Norton. Ltd, for D. E. Moore, baker, adjourned sine die; R. H. Bailey; for D. H. McKinley, baker, adjourned sine die; L. A. Woodward, Ltd., for R. Bpnnett, R. W» Britten. J. A O'Brien, bakers, adjourned sine die; Home Bakeries, Ltd., for A. B, V.
