TRADE TRAINING CENTRE

♦ OPENING CEREMONY AT PETONE . (P.A.) WELLINGTON. February. 27.,: A trade training centre established in Petone for the training of suitable former servicemen in bricklaying; plastering, and tiling was opened today by the Minister of Rehabilitation (the Hon. C. F. Skinner). It is* toe first of its kind in New-Zealand. More' than 52 men are already in training. - The opening ceremony was, attended by a number of visitors, as well as the Minister, of Finance (the .Hon. W. Nash) and the Director of Rehabilitation (Mr F, Baker), who presided. It{ i * Mr Nash spoke of the importance, pf such schools in the training- of artisans, without which it would be , impossible for the Government tq implement its housing programme and overtake the existing shortage of houses. -The schools were also important In that they enable men to be trained rapidly. , ' Mr Skinner said he considered the old, method of training Artisans was gqne for ever, for it had been demonstrated that, the average man could be trained tp become a tradesman in a far shorter time than was previously considered necessary. The old system; . which involved an,apprenticeship pf five years and in some cases seven years, appeared to be a thing of thg past. ::'y } The Minister , also emphasised the necessity for : the use of alternative materials in building construction, for it was impossible to supply all the timber reduired. That was why the school' had 'been opened so that instruction could be given in plastering and bricklaying.
