SONG RECITAL

A recital, mainly of English and of eighteenth century Italian songs,, was given by Miss Ethel Cumberpatoh lb Begg’s concert hall on Saturday evening. The songs showed, an interesting choice. It is not on every Saturday evening that one can hear songs by Paisiello, “Nel ’cor piu,” which so attracted Beethoven that he wrote a set ; of . variations for piano on it, by Alessandro Scarlatti. and by Paradies, and two welcome examples of Ivor Gurney’s songs. A canon by Martini, which was sung with Mr EmestN Climberpatch, was a real find. Miss Cumberpatch sang fluently and occasionally 1 with genuine feeling tor the mood of a song. Her voice is at its best in a lower register. Songs by Purcell. James Hook, Stanford, and Hamilton Harty were given; duets by Rubinstein, and songs by Schubert, Franz, and Mussorgsky were also sung. Assisting were Me Ernest Cumberpatch,: Miss Vera Yager, who • provided ac6ompaniments. Mrs Francis Bate, who played'with Mr Ernest Jenner Handel’s A major Sonata, and Mr Jenner, who played three sixteenth century, ; tute dances arranged by Respighi.
