ENGINEERING TRADE PROTEST
— ♦ — OBJECTION TO CONDITIONS A resolution that the press be excluded was passed at a meeting of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Amalgamated Engineering and Related Trades Union yesterday afternoon. The meeting was called lo discuss wages and working conditions in the engineering trade, with particular reference to recent conciliation proceedings. The adjourned stop-work meeting of members of the Wellington branch of the union Was held on Thursday, states the “Dominion.” Matters on which the men held they had just grievances related to hours on ship repair work and wages and conditions of general engineers and ship workers, With regard to the latter, the men are seeking an increase In the basic rate of 2s 4d and the maintenance of the semi-skilled and skilled margins. These matters have Tieen the subject of conciliation proceedings, but it is stated that the employers have held out for no variation from the pld award. The ship repair workers’ case has been reiprred to a further conference with the Union Steam Ship Company. The question of tjie wages and conditions of other workers was referred to the Federation of Laboyr for one month.
