JOSEPH CONRAD WINS CUP (PA) WAIROA, Feb. 4. The Wairoa Racing Club’s meeting was held on Saturday. The weather was very warm, and the going hard. His Excellency the Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newall) arrived early and remained for the whole programme, taking a keen interest in the events. . A , The cup saw a keen contest. Atoma was an early leader, followed by Joseph Conrad and Lastlk. ' Three furlongs from home. Atoma still had a slight advantage Over Joseph Conrad, with Silver Coin coming fast. In the run to the post, Joseph Conrad held on to win by a long neck, with Lastlk a length further back. The race should improve Atoma, which was making Its first appearance in a race over this distance. ~V . , The Ormond Memorial, which drew only four starters, was a splendid race. Circular Note and Tussock were fighting it out from the foot of the straight, when both Lastlk and Atoma came on the scene, and in the final furlong, Atoma secured the lead, going on to win from Circular Note, with Lastlk In third posi- ** The totalisator showed an Increase of £3443, compared with 1944.
