I ' X TURF_GOSSIP Racing at Rlccarton The Canterbury Jockey Clubls nontotalisator meeting at Rlccarton this afternoon is likely to attract many interested racegoers. The programme will comprise three events only, but all should provide some close racing. The Irwell Handicap, for two-year-olds, to start at 2.30 p.m., will give the speedy Montezuma an opportunity to earn her first winning stake, but there will be others in the field likely to have her fully extended. These include Avonbridge, Sword Dancer. Royal Vestments, Lexis, and Douglas Haig, which have all had a fair amount of racing. Should Golden Souvenir and Beau Cheval be both saddled up for the Middle Park Plate, to start at 3.5 .p.m., they will invest the race with much interest, and should fight out the final issue. Of the two-year-olds to oppose them. Loch Derg and Essay have the best credentials, but both had hard races at Trentham, while the latter previously was severely tested at Ellerslie. The most likely of the division may be Nightstalk, which should master the six-furlong journey. The Halswell Handicap, to start at 3.40 p.m., is for maiden three and four-year-olds. and although the field is disappointingly small, the issue appears very open. Lalla Meer, Double Cross, and Contemptuous appear to have the best prospects. • Winning Owners at Trentham The list of successful owners at the recent three days’ racing at Trentham was headed by Mr J.
