AWARD N.Z. AIRMEN

♦ BAR TO D.F.C. FOR DUNSANDEL MAN (P.A.) WELLINGTON, December 20. A bar to the Distiguished Flying Cross has been awarded to a New Zealand airman on active service in the European theatre. Another man receives the Distinguished Flying Cross. The recipients are>Bar to Distinguished Flying Cross: Acting-Squadron Leader Derrick Fitzgerald Westenra, D.F.C., whose father is Mr D. W. Westenra, of Dunsandel. Distinguished Flying Cross: Warrant Officer Donald McKenzie Tunnicliffe, whose sister is Mrs E - . L. Ward, of Invercargill.

Squadron Leader Westenra, who is an old boy of Christ’s College, has shot down nine enemy aircraft since he began his service in the Royal Air Force nearly five years ago. He is a fighter pile* with the unusual experience of having been trained in Kenya and Iraq, and then having served in Greece, Crete, Libya, Tripolitama, Tunisia. Sicily, Italy, and Britain. After his training Squadron Leader Westenra joined a Gladiator squadron in Greece in January, 1941. He served in Gladiators in Crete and then flew Tomahawks and Kittyhawks in North Africa. After the Battle of El Alamein he joined a Spitfire squadron at El Agheila and fought with it until the end of the Tunisian campaign.- He commanded the squadron in Sicily and Italy and then went to Britain, where he commanded a Mustang squadron, bombing motor transport feeding the German lines. On one of his last flights over Germany his squadron chased four Focke Wulis for 60 miles, shooting down three of them. Squadron Leader Westenra shot down one. bringing his total bag to nine.

Pharmacy Board Examinations.— The Pharmacy Board has decided for the purposes of its examinations to accept the School Certificate as the equivalent of the University Entrance Examination until the end of 1946. irrespective of the subjects in which the certificate has been awarded, 'j. reafter the certificate will not be accepted by the board unless a pass has been gained in certain subject?.— (P.A.)
