SUMNER COUNCIL'S ACTIVITIES
RESIDENTS TO BE MORE CLOSELY INFORMED ' The Sumner Borough Council is to endeavour to keep the borough residents more closely informed of its activities, according to a resolution passed at a meeting of the council this week, which stated that the council should endeavour to give more time at meetings to planning future improvements in the borough, and that the public be advised accordingly. Cr. F. L. Brandt, who moved the motion, said that many things were brought in to the council meetings which could be easily settled by the town clerk and the borough foreman, with the result that there was less time for constructive planning. “We don’t advertise ourselves enough," said Cr. Brandt, when claiming that residents of the borough knew little of the work done by the council. Cr. W. Machin, in seconding the motion, agreed that more publicity was desirable, but said he thought that Cr. Brandt did the cguncil “much less than justice,” as much had been done, even in the short time the present council had been in office. Cr. Lamb said he felt very strongly on the matter. He recalled the times when Sumner was “in its heydey,” and said that now, although a great deal of work was being done, the people knew nothing of the council’s programme, and all they could see was a very dilapidated Sumner. Cr. Duff: Cr. Lamb paints a very distressing picture. Cr. Machin: All is lost. Cr. W. B. Owen said he agreed with the spirit of Cr. Brandt’s motion and he believed the council had made a mistake in not adhering to the original intention to hold six-monthly public meetings. “We should be more the people’s representatives,” said . Cr. Owen. The motion was carried unanimously. •
