TROTTING NOTES
Driver Retained s , , _ * C. King has been retained to drive Seaborn and Claremorris in their engagements at the Auckland Trotting Clubs summer meeting.
No Divisions In Classics . ... An idea still exists that all trotting races have to be run in divisions If the size of the field exceeds the safety number; but- classic races are exempt from this rule.
Now With W. R. Butt Serapeum, a candidate for the Westport Cup, is now trained by W. R. Butt. Another which will be raced by Butt in future is =the aged trotting gelding El Peta.
Speedy Bonny Jack, which ran quite a fair race among the madien pacers at New Brighton on Saturday, is a four-year-old gelding by Jack Potts from Silk Bonny, which had a good turn of speed.
Trained In Southland Loyal Nurse and Barometer Chimes, the main early discussions for the Gore Cup, both dropped out at acceptances, and now Dundee Sandy and Quite Happy, both trained in Southland, are the main fancies.
Manners Improved St. Mary, a sister to Sea Gift, is now trained at New Brighton by G. Cameron. Her manners appear to have undergone a change for the better, because in Saturday's trials she stood well at the barrier and began smartly. Family Holiday Favourites Dorrington Hall, which on the strength of his easy win at Wairio, is likely to start a firm favourite for the Winton Juvenile Stakes, is a half-brqther to Sea Born, who will dispute favouritism in the Auckland Cup with Hilda Potts and Volo Senwod. Great Worth •
Great Worth, which is showing improved form in her training under G. Cameron, is bred in the purple, being by Great Bingen from Miss Worth (imp.), an imported American mare bred on the famed Axworthy—Peter the Great cross, which amounts almost to a religion in American breeding circles. A Strong Pedigree Chinook, whose recent track form shows that he is well forward for holiday engagements, is a four-year-old bay gelding by Lusty Volo from Mistral, a sister to Wrackler, winner of a New Zealand Cup and Dominion Handicap. Mistral is by Wrack from Trix Pointer, a great imported pacer which won a New Zealand Cup and Free-for-All. Form Retained
Play Safe raced well but unluckily at the last Auckland meeting, and his latest track work suggests he has retained the good form he showed on that occasion. He was right up third to Nola Scott and Characteristic in Saturday’s trials, and was closer at the finish than at any other stage. Admiral Wood Family Nolo Audubon, a capable novice pacer in R. J. Humphreys’s stable, comes of a long line of winners. A three-year-old chestnut gelding by Lusty Volo, he is out of Florrie Audubon, by Great Audubon—Miss Florrie C„ by Wildwood—D.l.G. To the same source can be traced Admiral Wood, Ferry Post, and many lesser lights. Speed In Abundance Aberhall, which is engaged at the Walkouaiti meeting on New Year’s Day, is a well-bred gelding, being a three-year-old by Dillon Hall from Moradine. by Adioo Guy—Myola, by O.Y.M.—Frltzella. etc. There is a great speed combination in this pedigree, because Dillon Hall took a record of 2min, and Adioo Guy 2min o%sec. . O.Y.M. came from the same sire line that resulted in Lawn Derby, Imin 59 2-ssec. Van Derby 2min 0 2-ssec, and many other great pacers.

TURF GOSSIP Answer to Correspondent Doubtful, Christchurch.—ln horse racing a distance is an interval measured back from the winning post to a point on the course marked by a flag or post called the distance post! In England and New Zealand it is a fixed limit of 240 yards. In the United States, under the Rules of the National Trotting Association, a distance is 80 yards for seven horses or fewer, and 100 yards for a greater number. On half-mile tracks it is 100 yards for seven horses or fewer and 150 yards for a greater number. Death of Stallion.
The imported staUion, Salmagundi, suffered a broken leg when kicked by a mare yesterday, and was destroyed. He was the sire of Macedoine and other good stayers. Foaled in 1924, Salmagundi was by Phalaris—Saldmundra by St. Frusquin. Rlccarton Work
With Riccarton trainers going on tour with their teams, for holiday racing, their convenience has been studied with a grass track available each morning this week. The conditions were pleasant yesterday, but though most of the horses were out, pace work was the general order. Jumping Lucky Jack and Roman Son, which have hurdle engagements at Wlngatui, were mates in an attractive school over four hurdles, with Lucky Jack claiming a slight advantage over the final flight. He may go to Waikouaitl between the two Wingatui days, but Roman Son is likely to travel on to Wyndham and Invercargill. C. G. Humphries sent his pair. Great March and The Vulture, over four hurdles, which they jumped in good style. These two will go to Wlngatui, where Great March will take on the hurdle races. The Vulture is similarly engaged, but he is also in flat races. . Test Pilot had a mate in Cobalt for a round of the steeplechase fences, which they Jumped attractively. Test Pilot will be restricted to road work during the holidays and then will be prepared for a trip to Riverton at Easter. Cobalt joined R. Register’s stable recently, and he is a promising novice. Northern Engagements Several Riccarton trainers went north last night, taking horses which are to race at North Island holiday meetings. F. A. Roberts took John Gay, Irish Note, Arustra, Quick 'March, and Lalla Meer for the Manawatu and Wairarapa meetings, while D. Spence took Honest Sal with a similar programme in view. J. M. Olive, who travelled with Nurnie, Junior, and Finalist, will go to Manawatu and Marton. All of these horses look well, but Junior has not had any racing this season. Holiday Arrangements The Riccarton tracks will be closed on Christmas Day, but they will be open on Boxing Day, also on January 1 and 2. Barrier Practice Riccarton trainers will have the use of a starting barrier to-morrow morning. A Visitor Ring Chief, which Is in the sprint at Waikouaitl, has,.done all his racing In the North Island. He won five races as a two-year-old, but in nearly 40 starts in three seasons since then he has been successful only once, though placed on several occasions. Record Entries The Southland Racing Club received 216 nominations for its summer meeting, a record total by the club for a single day. Atier a Soell
Royal Flight, which has an engagement in me Invercargill Cup, showed good form during the winter, but she has been spelling since she returned home in August, after two races at the Grand National meeting.
May be Retired Inscription, a smart performer, which has done no racing this season, has gone
