D.S.C. FOR NAVAL OFFICER

(PA.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 18. The award of the Distinguished Service Cross for services which led up to the successful assault on the Normandy coast has been made to Lieutenant John Forgie, R.N.Z.N.V.R., the younger son of Mrs J. R. Forgie, of Remuera, according to notification received from the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones). Lieutenant Forgie, commanding a 72ft motor launch, acted as navigation leader in piloting convoys during the landing operations. Redcliffs Sports Centre The offer of a Redcliffs resident to lend £125 to the Sumner Borough Council to facilitate the immediate erection of a pavilion for the Redcliffs Sports Centre was referred to in a letter from the centre received at last night’s meeting of the council. Explaining that there were legal technicalities which at present made an acceptance of the offer impossible, the Mayor (Mr C. G. Burgess) said he felt the council should pay a tribute to the offer and to the very fair attitude of the centre. A letter was received from the centre asking the extent of control the council wished to have over the pavilion. To give the centre as much freedom of control as was possible it was decided that it be granted a lease of the property, with a nominal rent of Is a year, the lease to be renewable annually at the pleasure of the council. Councillors were unanimous in their approval of the manner in which the centre was prenared to negotiate, and it was decided that a letter be sent explaining the present situation fully.
