PAINT Paint can conceal and preserve as well as decorate. It is an essential munition of war. Enormous quantities are needed » camouflage buildings, caps, ships and vehicles, and to protect tanks, guns, shells and other stores from tropical sum or northern fog and snow. Millions of yards of fabric have to be treated for special purposes. Acres of metal have to be coated to withstand the juices o* acids of preserved foods. The British; Navy and Merchant Navy demand vast supplies of paint; including .special types to combat the •growths which form on ships’ bottoms. These growths may increase the fuel consumption of a 10,000 ton ship by 14 tons a day, besides greatly reducing her speed. Then there arc all sorts of-special sorts of paints—for the detection of dangerous fumes or poison gas, for protection against fire, and the "dopes” without which aircraft would be almost helpless. Into a can of paint goes the product of the British chemical industry and the skill and experience of the research chemist.
