GERALDINE R.C. CUP WON BY FINDON The Geraldine Racing Club’s annual race meeting was held at Orari on Saturday in fine weather, and the attendance was the largest for many years. Two races had to be run in divisions, and the meeting finished nearly an hour late. Speculation was reasonably brisk, the sum of £27,445 10s being handled against £28,028 at last year’s meeting. Features of the day’s racing were the decisive win of Findon in the Geraldine Cup, an outstanding performance by First In in the open sprint, and a blanket finish in the concluding event. The track was in firm, order, and times were comparatively fast. Findon was sent out a staunch favourite for the Geraldine Cup and again outclassed the field. Maggiore was in front when the back stretch was reached, and led to the half-mile from Rawhamai, Boolamskee, Hearth, and Findon. The last-named drew to the front at this stage and cantered into the straight clear of Hearth, Boolamskee, Maggiore, and Arustra. Findon was being eased up at the post and still had four lengths to the good from Arustra, while Maggiore got up on the post to snatch third money from Hearth, whose rider appeared to take matters too easily. Boolamskee was next with Rawhamai last. The winner had the unusual experience of returning exactly the same figures for a place as for a win. . . , First In justified her favouritism for the Squatters' Handicap by a comfortable win. Giving trouble at the start, she was about two lengths behind the field when the barrier was released, but y/ith half the journey covered she was in third place to Fur Coat and Wise Girl, and followed them into the straight with Sascha In close attendance. First In soon drew past the leaders in the run home, and carried on to win going away from Fur Coat, who only held on to beat Sascha by a head, with heads to Rex Maitland and to Wise Girl. The finish of the Belfield Hack Handicap was probably the most spectacular seen on the course. When the run home was commenced the field was headed by a bunch comprising Lex, Trueway, Night Robe, Kilcato, OJga’s Choice, Salary, and Bill Gundi, and all of these, with the exception of Lex, approached the post in a group, with Trueway showing the way slightly in front of Olga’s Choice. The verdict went to Trueway by half a head from Olga’s Choice, with Kilcato a close third, a neck in front of Night Robe, with necks to Salary and Bill Gundi. Trueway is a four-year-old brother to Serenata and Representative, and although never likely to reach their class, he now promises to be a useful member of F. D. Jones’s stable, which has not been in luck for some time past. G. Waddell, rider of the winner. Dlleas, was cautioned. Chote was charged with crossing over too soon in front of Kincrop and Hula Chief at the straight entrance and then going over alongside Dileas, where Waddell, thinking there would be a collision and that his mount would be squeezed against the rails, put out a hand to ward Chote off. TROTTING NOTES Metropolitan T.C. Entries of present yearlings for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's New Zealand Derby Stakes, 1946, Will close at 5 p.m. on Friday next. —1 Behandiraps ' After Saturday’s racing at Orari the following rehandicaps have been declared for the Methven Trotting Club’s* meeting: Mount Harding Handicap: Sunny Glen to 12 yards; War Form to 60 yards. At Orari The Geraldine Trot on Saturday was decided in two divisions. In the first Vanard was the pacemaker from the early stages and was still in charge entering the straight, but inside the final furlong Sunny Glen drew to the front and although challenged strongly by Loyal Chief, held on for an impressive win. Vanard weakened into third place, in front of Avondale Lass, Desmond’s Pride, and Jervis Bay. The second division was won by Barometer Chimes, who, bracketed with Lady Spray and Avondale Lass, returned a very short win price and owing to the pool being divided a place dividend well under the original outlay. Barometer Chimes was always one of the leaders and led into the straight from Nola Wrack, Avowal. Navy Queen, Water Ranger, and Pencarrow. The leader had no trouble in holding his place in the run home, comfortably beating V/ater Ranger, who finished fast to head off Navy Queen. Jeeves was next In front of Nola Wrack and Pencarrow. The last-named appeared likely to get a place commencing the final furlong, but broke up nearing the post. Lady Spray was out of the contest early through failing to move off with the field. War Form Wins War Form showed improvement on her Ashburton form by winning the Orari Trqt after an interesting race in which the field was well bunched with half a mile to go. Bonny Bridge led through the back stretch and into the straight, from War Form, Sir Julien, Diamond Jim, Sponsor, Horatio Nelson, Ingle Belmer. and Sunny Glen. War Form gradually wore down Bonny Bridge in the run home and beat him impressively by a length Ingle Belmer finished from well back into third place, two lengths in front of Diamond Jim with Sunny Glen wide out next in front of Caledonian Girl, who lest her chance by failing to go away properly.

Impressive Work The rather obscurely-bred mare Sunny Glen, by Iron Ore from Blue Glen, put up a creditable performance to win the first division of the Geraldine Trot from 24 yards. Seldom are maiden events won from a handicap these days. Sunny Glen was on a break more than once in the run home, and tangled Just on reaching the post. The opposition ( she met was only fair, and in a much faster run race later in the day the best she could do' was fifth. On this occasion, in a tighter class, she started from the limit. A Short Return There is little doubt that the reputation which preceded Lady Spray to Geraldine was the reason for the shortpriced favouritism of the Barometer Chimes, Avondale Lass, Lady Spray bracket in the Geraldine Trot, but Lady Spray lost all chance at the start, and it was left to Barometer Chimes to lead all the way in his division and save the day for backers cf a combination which returned cramped prices. Barometer Chimes paced 2min 51 l-ssec in a 3min Isec class and won easily. He is a goodlooking aged' stallion by Wrack from Edith Chimes and has improved since going into J. Bryce's stable. Finishing On Loyal Chief finished better than any * of his opponents in the first division of the Geraldine Trot. This four-year-old gelding by Grattan Loyal from Chieftainess was thought worthy of a place in the good field for the Metropolitan Four-year-old Stakes in August, and has now given some justification for that estimate of his ability. Smart Novice If Vanard is taken to the Greymouth meeting he should pay his way cn thd half-mile track. Creditable Showing Water Ranger did not make a good beginning in the second division of the Geraldine Trot, but would not have beaten Barometer Chimes in any case. For all # that, he is one of the best maiden propositions in sight. Encouraging Jeeves showed sufficient speed in the last two furlongs o( his race at Orari to be worth keeping in view. The Mixegin—Enigma gelding is by a good trotter out cf a good trotter, but is himself a pacer. Enigma won several races for D. Teahen. d
