HOLIDAY PAY

♦ PIECEWORKERS IN FREEZING INDUSTRY (P A.) WELLINGTON, September 23. The rate of 3s 6d an hour has been fixed by the Minister of Labour (the Hon. P. C. Webb) as the amount at which pieceworkers in the freezing industry will be paid when taking their two weeks’ annual holiday under the Annual Holiday Act. The act provides that where no hourly rate is prescribed in an industrial award covering pieceworkers, the rate for the purpose of annual holiday payment should be determined by the Minister. This matter had special significance in connexion with pieceworkers in the freezing industry as many of them were normally able to earn up to £2O in a full working week, the Minister said. Representatives of the freezing companies and employees’ organisations had advised him that they were unable to agree on the rate for certain classes of pieceworkers covered by the Freezing Workers’ Award. “I have fixed the rate at 3s 6d an hour for these workers," said the Minister. “The hourly rate fixed by me is the same as that fixed in awards for other classes of pieceworkers.”
