The Governor-General has reappointed the Hon. J. K. Archer, of Christchurch, and the Hon. J. E. Duncan, of Te Awamutu, to the Legislative Council for a further term— (P.A.)
The Distinguished Flying Cross has been awarded to Acting-Flight Lieutenant William Bagley Smaill, formerly of Auckland, says the Air Department. He was born in Dunedin in 1912, and attended the Levin District High School. Later he farmed in the Manawatu and Auckland districts. His father is Mr C. S. Smaill, of Auckland. (P.A.)
Mr W. R. Carey was re-elected president of the South Island Motor Union in Christchurch yesterday. Other officials elected were: vice-presidents, Messrs P. W. Br6en, C. M. Rout, and R. Wilson; executive, Messrs D. H. Thompson, J. S Hawkes, C. G. Curtis, F. W. Freeman, B. Falck, G. Hamilton, and R. H. Parker. Mr T. M. Charters. Christchurch, was elected president of the New Zealand Fire Boards’ Association at the annual conference m Wellington recently. Mr S. S. Dean, Wellington, who has been president for the last five years, had declined renomination because of ill-health, and a motion of deep appreciation of his services was passed by delegates with acclamation. Mr John Farrell, touring representative of the J. C. Williamson Comedy Company, arrived in Christchurch yesterday from Dunedin.
