TRINITY COLLEGE CONCERT

ADDRESS BY MR ANDERSEN TYRER

The hope that the teachers of Christchurch would produce musicians, not only pianists and violinists, was expressed by Mr Andersen Tyrer, examiner for the Trinity College of Music. London, in an address after the concert presented by outstanding competitors in the local examinations, and field in the Canterbury University College Hall last evening. Mr Tyrer said that the Trinity College musicianship test was important in that it gave the young performer a realisation of the many different aspects of music which must be mastered if a full musical knowledge were to be obtained. Dr. Vernon Griffiths said that the study of orchestral instruments should be increased, and that a high standard of all-round musicianship could be obtained only (through a knowledge of the theory as well as the practice of music.

In presenting medals to the successful performers, Dr. J. Hight. chairman of the local committee, congratulated the recipients, and announced that Mr Tyrer had given a special prize of £1 to Veronica Costigan for her excellent demonstration, during the concert, of the musicianshin test of the college. Recipients of prizes were:—gold medallist. Judith Hollander (higher local honours): silver medallist Alison Black (intermediate honours): bronze medallist, Derek McKeown . (junior honours). , , . _ Piano solos were played by Derek McKeown (junior), Judith Hollander (senior), Elizabeth Hooper (licentiate) Alison Black (intermediate). Barbara Dear (advanced senior) Zena Johnson (associate), and Stewart Elton (m----termediate) played a violin solo.

Mr A. T. Campbell, representing the Workers’ Educational Assdciation for Canterbury and Westland, gave an address on Wednesday at an evening arranged by the Ashburton branch of the Teachers’ Institute.
