NEW GUINEA NATIVES

PREVENTING EXPLOITATION BY TRADERS

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

SYDNEY. September 13. To prevent exploitation of natives in New Guinea by black market traders, early resumption of civil control, at least in Papua, is likely to be considered soon by Australian Ministers. Unofficial reports have reached Canberra ■ that natives are holding currency in amounts variously estimated at £3,000,000 and higher. Some authorities interested in native welfare fear that attempts may be made by unscrupulous traders to run small boatloads of cheap merchandise to New Guinea from Australia in an attempt to obtain easy money from the natives. To prevent this it is suggested an early resumption of civil administration could provide banking facilities and other trade arrangements which would save the natives from exploitation.

Accumulation of native wealth is said to have come from the widespread purchase by soldiers of souvenirs, as well as the payment of wages to large numbers of natives employed by the Army. -
