WORLD SURPLUS OF WOOL

♦ MAJOR PORTION HELD IN AUSTRALIA (Rec. 11.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Sept. 19 At the close of the 1944-45 wool season there will be a world carryover of 10,000,000 bales of wool of which 6,000,000 bales will be held in Australia. Australian holdings will thus equal about two normal clips. Experts here believe that with careful handling the war accumulation can be disposed of profitably in reclothing the people of Europe. Wool production in Europe provides less than one-third of its requirements, estimated at 600,000 tons a year. Consumption, it is believed, could be stimulated if countries had the necessary purchasing power. One estimate is that it will take at least five years after the war to clear surplus wool stocks. r- I
