APPEALS HEARD

INDUSTRIAL MANPOWER COMMITTEE YESTERDAY’S DECISIONS “I think I have done quite enough for my country,, and when I ask for one little thing this Is the way you treat me," said an appellant during the hearing of a case by the Industrial Manpower Committee yesterday. The appeal was by Lawrence F. Luxton against the direction of Mrs L. F. Luxron to temporary employment with the North Canterbury Hospital Board. The appellant had served In the Navy from the outbreak of war. "You have already had your wife released from her full-time employment. You have not done anything to make her available for hospital work,” said the chairman of the committee (Mr K. G. Archer). The appellant said he was not In good health, and it was necessary for him ■ to have specially prepared meals. The appeal was allowed on medical grounds. Seven appeals by British Leathercrafts. Ltd., against the direction of employees as either machinists or factory hands to Duckworth Turner, Ltd., were adjourned sine die. The employees were: M. H. Buckett, C. E. Nassen, R. M. Noonan, N. B. Blackburn. H. M. Dent, D. I. Bucktin, and E. Gaskell. It was stated by T. W. Perry, who appeared for the firm, that in normal times handbags formed 100 per cent, of the firm's output. They were now down to 40 per cent. The other 60 per cent; was made up of essential military and civilian work. "The handbag trade as a whole has to be prepared to give up a proportion ■ of its workers to essential Industry.” said Mr Archer. “Forty per cent, can hardly be called negligible.” Other appeals were: Mrs A. F. Fuller against direction as an inexperienced machinist to the Fuller Clothing Manufacturing Company, allowed; Mrs S. E. Mugford, against direction as an Inexperienced machinist to the Fuller Clothing Manufacturing Company, allowed; Clevedon N. Stewart, against refusal of permission to terminate his employment v.-ith Paynter and Hamilton, Ltd., allowed: Hugh D, Falconer against the direction of Mrs H. D. Falconer as an Inexperienced machinist with' British Shoes, Ltd., allowed, the committee suggesting that the reservist should find suitable part-time work, preferably convenient to her home; Sinclair. Melbourne and Company, Ltd.. against permission being granted Donald G. Becker to terminate his employment, dismissed; Thomas R. Warren, against refusal of permission to terminate his employment with P. Graham .and Son, Ltd., dismissed: Watsons, Jewellers. Ltd., against the direction of Helen C. Newell as an inexperienced machinist to the Christchurch Clothing Company, Ltd., appeal allowed.
