£7,583,731 RAISED CANTERBURY LOW ON LIST (P.A.) WELLINGTON. September 4. Since the opening of the Victory Loan last Monday, up to this evening £2,059,240 has been received. National savings and advance subscriptions received before the opening date produced £5.524.491, making a grand total oi £7,583,131. £510,000 RAISED IN DISTRICT

A preliminary return of subscriptions to the Victory War Loan in the Christchurch postal district from Kaikoura to the Rangitata river (including advance applications for stock which have now been confirmed), shows the total at approximately £510,000. This week the issue of regular bulletins on the progress of subscriptions against the quotas for the various areas will be commenced. “Send a cable to Hitler” is the caption under which a competition, to foster interest in the loan, is being held this week. Entrants are invited to send to the Victory Loan Post Office in Cathedral square, “a 12-word farewell message to Hitler.” Those judged most appropriate will be read from the stage in Cathedral square between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday, and a £ 1 Victory Bond will be awarded to the first successful entrant to claim the prize on the stage during that period.
