CENTENARY OF METHODISM
♦ i MEMORIALS UNVEILED AT NEW PLYMOUTH SITE OF FIRST CHURCH (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 3.. The Dominion centenary of Primitive Methodism is being celebrated at New Plymouth where the Rev. Robert Ward established the first Primitive < Methodist Church in New Zealand in September, 1844, r -Totara trees were planted on the site ® of the proposed Maori girls’ college at J Spotswood as memorials to the early 5 Wesleyan missionaries, to Mr Ward, i and to two Maoris. , In the afternoon, at the Fitzroy Church, on the site of the first Primitive Methodist Church in New Zealand, a cross of South Canterbury sandstone in memory of Mr Ward, was unveiled by the Rev. R. B. Tinsley, presi- 3 dent of the Methodist Conference. The j cross is the gift of the Ward family j which ?lso presented a pulpit and Com- q munion table and railing at an unusual v celebration held in Devon street. The' speakers stood where .Mr Ward first I preached at New Plyrfibuth. »
