" Greater Effort Needed” CANTERBURY CAMPAIGN “We will have to do much better than we are doing if oUr quota is to be reached,” said Mr L. J. Gillespie (organiser for the Victory War Loan in the Christchurch district) yesterday. Mr Gillespie said that, qt the conclusion of business yesterday, investments had nearly reached £IOO,OOO for" the first five days. “To obtain the required amount, however, we have to get £IOO,OOO daily for 40 consecutive days,” he said. Navy Week will begin on Monday, and several activities have been arranged by the War Loan Committee. Models of ships will be displayed in shop windows, and a large model of a ship will be displayed in Cathedral square, together with items of naval equipment. Mr Lloyd Lamble, of the J. C, Williamson Company now playing in the city, was at a meeting of the committee yesterday, accompanied by Mr W. Russell, another member of the company. Mr Lamble addressed members on the war loan campaign in Australia, and some of the suggestions made by him were adopted for use in the Christchurch district. More than 50 children’s dogs were paraded in the show held in Cathedral sauare yesterday afternoon. The novelty classes attracted particular interest. • The finalists in the talent contest were unable to perform because of the rain last evening. A concert by the Christchurch Tramway Concert Party will be held at Waiau this evening in aid of the loan. On. Sunday evening, both the Civic Theatre and the Theatre Royal have been engaged for Victory Loan concerts. Identical programmes will be presented by the performers being transferred from one theatre to the other. Members of the J. C. Williamson Company will take part, and the performers who will travel with the “band waggon” will give an introductory presentation. TE AROHA 'JOCKEY CLUB TO CONTRIBUTE £ISOO (P.A.) TE AROHA, September 1. Up to 4 p.m. yesterday Te -Aroha contributions to the Victory War Loan totalled £9860. At the annual meeting last evening the Te Aroha Jockey Club decided to contribute £ISOO to the loan.
