UNCHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Sir, —Secular education is at fault in neglecting the spiritual part of man, the most important part of the human creature. It is. as though physical training concentrated on the I 6 ® B, ignoring the rest of the body. M r Buttle’s letter contains about one misstatement every two lines. About one-sixth of New Zealand youths were not secularly educated, thank God. They are not in Europe to prevent Europeans killing one another, but to help in the killing. Probably less than one quarter of the European fighters have had religious education. Secularists are at present in the saddle. It is up to Christians to unseat them. There are enough of us, if we can put aside sectional prejudices and unite to insist on education of the whole child, body and soul.—Yours, etc., G. F. SEWARD. Lincoln, August 11, 1944.
Sir,—To any but an exceptionally dull or prejudiced person it could but be clear that Mainwaring’s discussed books are not suitable' for children, whatever they may be for university students or adults of ■ reasoning age. The whole of the two volumes contain endless accounts of persecution, cruelty, and war, best forgotten if ever friendship is to grow among nations or peoples. Teach children to be creative, industrious, observant of nature, kindly and understanding of all creatures and living things. Bury the hatchet of past disputes at least from their young sight if ever a new order is to “evolve.” Whatever is stated of love in Christ’s teaching or that of others is not likely to eventuate from placing pictures of adult mistakes, human greed, and hatred before the adolescent, who expects better from us all, by a long, long way, than he has ever had so far, by our example.— Yours, etc., EDUCARE. August 12, 1944.
