PRISONERS OF WAR

REPORTS ON CAMPS LIBRARIES AND GARDENS PROVIDED (P.A.) WELLINGTON. August 12. The Prisoners of War Inquiry Office has received information concerning Belaria Camp, one of six sections of Stalag Luft 111. The camp is not overcrowded although there is a shortage of commonrooms. The prisoners sleep in two-tiered bunks and have two blankets each Heating by coal stoves is sufficient. Washing facilities are satisfactory but there are no showers. Cooking facilities are also satisfactory.

Recreational and educational facilities are being organised. A British medical officer is in charge of a small infirmary. A report has come to hand from the British camp representative at Stalag VIIIA, dated May 9, The library there now contains 5000 volumes. Book binding apparatus has arrived. The attendance at classes is very satisfactory, although with warmer weather outdoor sport is a great counter attraction. Following a request the authorities have allocated certain portions of the camp to be used as gardens. Kiwis took first place in requests for plote. By the end of April there were 300 plots, six feet by 12, and locally-purchased vegetable seeds were planted as well as seed from Geneva.

Camp 8.A.8. 20 was visited in April by the International Red Cross representative. The food supplies are good and there is a reserve to cover five months. The clothing position is satisfactory and conditions are good. Medical supplies are sufficient and hygiene conditions are good. Work is heavy and the discipline strict. There is a library, religious services are held, and games are played.
