REPRESENTATIVE MATCH CANTERBURY BEATS N.Z. UNIVERSITIES
In a fast, even game on a good ground, the Canterbury hockey .representatives beat New Zealand Universities by 3 goals to 2 on Saturday. The University players held their own until midway through the second spell, when the players began to show the effect of the strenuous week’s tournament. In the early stages of the game the University forwards pressed hard and the Canterbury defence was fully tested. Altken, at centre half, and R. Short, on the wing, were prominent in many of Universities’ raids, Short putting over some brilliant centres. Rountree scored Universities' only goal in the first half from a penalty corner, and Universities led by one goal at half-time. Rountree and Kyle were responsible for Universities' second goal, Kyle finishing off a clever piece of play. Canterbury s plav improved and Leney netted with a magnificent shot. Canterbury was now on the offensive and N. Bowden centred after a smart run for Rusbridge to cut in and score with a great shot. The closing stages were in Canterbury’s favour, and N. Bowden netted the winning goal a few minutes before time. Final score: Canterbury 3, New Zealand Univeristies 2. Umpires: Messrs E. Cummins and K. Hamilton. CANTERBURY COLTS v. N.Z.
