VESSEL IDLE
WATERFRONT DISPUTE AT WELLINGTON CARGO ALLEGED TO BE DANGEROUS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 6. A ship loading a special type of cargo at Wellington was idle on Saturday afternoon and to-day because of the waterside workers refusing to handle the cargo unless they were paid a substantial extra sum hourly. The men claimed that the cargo was dangerous to handle, but it was stated that the danger, if any, was very slight.
The Waterfront Control Commission informed the waterside workers concerned that if they carried on the commission would go further into the matter of extra pay for the particular cargo, but the men are said to have stood by the figure originally asked for.
This the commission could not agree to, and consequently the vessel remained idle over the week-end.
It is understood that arrangements have been'made by the commission to start handling the cargo to-morrow morning.
