The monthly meeting of the Papanui W.C.T.U. was held in the Presbyterian Schoolroom, Mrs Thornton presiding over a good attendance. After the routine business was discussed. Major Wilkes, of the Salvation Army, gave an interesting talk on the workbasket as a symbol of the spiritual life. The sudden death occurred on Saturday at Hanmer Springs of Mrs G E M Smuts-Kennedy. Mrs Smuts-Ken-nedy was born at Cape Town in 1885 and arrived in Wellington in 1920 She took a very keen interest in many charitable organisations and her enthusiastic work on behalf of the Wellington After-care Associating and the Howard League will always be remembered Mrs Smuts-Kennedy is survived by her husband, two daughters and two sons

An evening party in aid of the funds of the Sea Cadets was held last evening in the National Club room by the Christchurch branch of the Overseas League. A competition was won by Miss Forence Nichnlls and a programme arranged by Mr H Sweney was enjoyed. The performers were Miss Marjorie Nelson. Miss Margaret Hamilton, and Mr Maurice McDougall (songs) Misses Colleen Coulter Betty Burt, and Audrey Eady (humorous recitations) Miss Romola Griffiths (violin solos). Miss Joan Brown (piano solos). Misses Jill Bond and Beverley Burrows (piano duets), and Misses Burt and Coulter (character sketch) Miss V. Wilson was accompanist The president of the league, Mr C. G. McKellar. thanked Mr Sweney and the artists.

Half of the pictures given by the Dutch artist, A. H. Gouwe, of Raiatea, Tahiti in aid of the Netherlands Soldiers and Sailors’ Fund in New Zealand. have already been sold in Auckland.
