SERVICE WITH NAVY

(PA) WELLINGTON. June 9. The Hon. F. Jones, Minister of Defence, has been advised by the Admiralty that the King has approved the award of the D.S.O, on the occasion of his birthday to TemporaryLieutenant Maurice Leigh Newman, R.N.Z.N.V.R. Lieutenant Newman joined the Royal New Zealand Navy as an ordinary seaman (scheme B) on July 13, 1941, arid after completing his training with the Royal Navy was promoted to tern-pdrary-sub-lieutenant, R.N.Z.N.V.R., on August 14, 1942, and to temporary-lieu-tenant on August 14, 1943. Before joining the Royal New Zealand Navy, Lieutenant Newman was an accountant. He was born at Christchurch in 1915. His next-of-kin is his father, Mr E. J. Newman, Christchurch.
