May 30 ' the Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newall) has announced that the King has been graciously pleased to approve the following awards to '^ va l perso "2 nel serving in the south Pacific area. Distinguished Service Medal Telegraphist Templeton Niven Witham, R.N.Z.N. iMurarrt CarTelegraphist George Edward ca penter, R.N.Z.N. Mention in Dispatches Able Seaman John Gallon, R.N.V.R. Telegraphists Witham and Carpenter received their medals for courage and good service in the Solomon Islands Able Seaman Gallon was mentioned in dispatches for skill in action again I an enemy submarine. Telegraphist Witham joined the Royal New Zealand Navy m January, 3942, and aft# serving in New Zealand was drafted for special duty in the south Pacific area. He was born in 1915 in Auckland, and before joining the Navy was a factory hand. His next-of-kin is his wife. Mrs M. Witham, of 58 Darlington road, Miramar, Wellington. . . , ~ Telegraphist Carpenter joined the Royal New Zealand Navy in January. 1941, and after serving in New Zealand was drafted for special duty in the south Pacific area. He was born in 1920 at Christchurch, and - before joining the Navy was a cadet in the railways. His next-of-kin is his father, Mr W, Carpenter, of Sunset parade, Plimmerton. Able Seaman Gallon served in the Tyne Division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve from July, 1939. and was mobilised for war service in 1939 He was lent to the Royal New Zealand Navy in November, 1941, and is still serving in one of H.M. New Zealand ships. He was born in 1921. and his civilian employment was glass worker. His next-of-kin is his wife, Mrs Jean Gallon, of 6 Percy street, Lemington-on-Tyne, Northumberland, England.
