MAGISTRATE'S COURT

MONDAY (Before Mr E. C. Lewey, S.M.) ALLEGED OPIUM SMOKING Fung Dop, aged 37 years, a gardener, was charged with having in his possession a pipe for smoking opium: Fong Lee, 60 years, was charged with being the occupier of premises which were used for the purpose of smoking opium, and also with having in his possession opium prepared for smoking: and Young Sam, otherwise known as Don Lew, aged 36 years, was charged with having in his possession a pipe used for the purpose of smoking opium and with smoking prepared opium. Mr R. P. Thompson, who represented the three accused, applied for a remand until June 12. The application was granted, bail being allowed each accused in his own recognisance of £IOO and one surety of £IOO. THEFT OF RUG Waller Kerr, aged 20 years, a labourer, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a travelling rug valued at £5, the property of Dorothy Richards. Senior-Detective H. Nuttall said Kerr had come from Methven in a bus on which the complainant had left a rug, Intending to collect it on the return ]oumey. Accused had taken the rug, and the only excuse he had to offer was that he was "short of blankets.” . The Magistrate remanded accused until June 1, bail being granted in the sum of £25. .
