MANPOWER APPEALS
DECISIONS ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY
An appeal by Jack Leslie Laby, on behalf of Maurice Linton, was struck out for want of jurisdiction by the Christchurch Industrial Manpower Appeal Committee at a sitting in Christchurch yesterday. Mr K. G. Archer presided, and associated with him were Messrs H. Lee (employers’ representative) and P. J. Kelly (employees' representative). The appeal was.against the Manpower Officer holding that Maurice Linton had not been transferred from the position of leading hand with Hayward Bros, and Company, Ltd,, Christchurch, or that Maurice Linton had ever been employed as a leading hand. The committee’s decision was as follows; "This appeal is based upon a letter from the Manpower Officer to the union dated April 20, 1944. No application for permission to transfer this worker had at any time been made by the company. The Manpower Officer’s letter was in reply to a complaint from the union that the worker had been wrongly reduced in status. The letter which is appealed from is neither >a consent to nor a refusal of consent to a transfer, but is in our opinion no more than an expression of opinion by the Manpower Officer to the secretary of the union in response to his prior letter. We do not think that any decision has been given by the Manpower Officer from which an appeal can lie, and this appeal will therefore be struck out for want of jurisdiction.” Other decisions were as follows: James Charles Moir, appeal against refusal, of permission to terminate his employment with C. Hunton, Ltd.—dismissed; Lynley Edith Annie Bruce, appeal against refusal of permission to terminate her employment with St. George’s Maternity Hospital.—allowed; Ivan Roger Prosser, appeal against his direction as a labourer with the Alloy Steel Works, Ltd., Sockburn—struck out, as Manpower Officer s direction was to be withdrawn; Albert Frederick Helm, appeal against refusal of permission to terminate his employment with Palmer and Doak, Ltd., Rangiora—dismissed; lan Robert McCormick, appeal against refusal of permission to terminate his employment with the Post and Telegraph Department, Christchurchallowed: Alfred George Thorne, appeal against refusal of permission to terminate his employment with Duckworth.
