GERMAN PRISON CAMPS
REPORTS FROM RED CROSS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 27. The Prisoners of War Inquiry Office states that advice was received during the week of the transfer of another 10 prisoners from Italy to Germany, leaving 354 of whom no official information has been received. The International Red Cross Committee reports on a visit by its representative to Oflag IX R/H. Uniforms, underclothing, and shoes were in a satisfactory condition. The sanitary installations were good and weekly showers were provided. Rations were supplemented by food parcels. The infirmary, which had' 10 beds, treated mild cases, and the general state of health was satisfactory. A visit of an oculist had been requested for the benefit of some of the older officers. There was a good 'ihrary and much use was made of the facilities provided by the educational books section. Of 120 prisoners studying for an examination 60 were already successful. Keen interest was taken in playing" games and walks organised in the were much appreciated, The representative said the camp made a good impression. The Inquiry Office has received a request for a New Zealand farmer to correspond with an English lad in Stalag IVF. The request was made through a New Zealander. who states that the prisoner a knowledge of farming and intends to come to New Zealand to take up farming after the war.
