BOROUGH COUNCIL ELECTIONS
—♦ — INTEREST AT SUMNER The triangular contest for the mayoralty of Sumner is the first for at least 25 years, and the likely effect of the vote-splitting is causing much speculation among the electors. The contest promises to be interesting. as all three candidates, Messrs C. G. Burgess, E. T. Chitty, and F. W. J. Murdoch, are well known as former borough councillors. There was no contest for the Mayoralty at the 1941 election, the retiring Mayor (Mr J. E. Tail) being elected unopposed. At the previous election, Mr Tait was opposed by Mr F. W. J. Murdoch. A supplementary roll of 564 brings the total roll to 2879, an increase of 342 on the total roll for the last election. The contest for seats on the council should also be interesting as there are 15 candidates, including four excouncillors, for the eight vacancies. the recent increase made to pig producers is totally inadequate to meet present conditions, and strongly, recommends that additional payments be made to make production economic; (4) that the price now paid for pigs up to 1701b be extended to cover pigs up to 2001b, except for the chopper class."
