BUILDING BY CITY COUNCIL

“ SUBSTANTIAL ACHIEVEMENT IN WAR TIME” In spite of war-time difficulties, which had become acute since the entry of Japan into the war, the Christchurch City Council had built or had under construction an additional 44 cottages for old-age pensioners, said Mr G. D. Griffiths, a Citizens’ Association candidate for the council, in an election address at St. Matthew’s Church hall. He contended that this was a substantial achievement by the council under Citizens’ Association control, as previous councils in much more favourable conditions had built only 50 such homes. There had been a great deal of building activjty by the council in other directions, including residences for caretakers of parks. Mr Griffiths said the personnel of the association’s nominated candidates contained men with expert technical knowledge to assist in meeting the housing shortage, and the policy of the candidates envisaged a serious attempt to meet the .position. He also emphasised the importance of the town planning scheme, which since ,1941 had become a metropolitan scheme and not one applicable only to the city.
