HOCKEY

EVEN GAMES ON SATURDAY All- hockey matches on Saturday were evenly contested, and in no case was the margin greater than one goal. Trinity had too much pace for the Selwyn backs, and won a fast, interesting game by 3 goals to 2. Outstanding in Trinity’s defence was the play of E. Parrott, who received staunch support from R. Samson and Clarke, the latter a goalkeeper promoted from a lower grade team. The halves bustled the Selwyn forwards, who were disorganised and lacked combination. The nippy Trinity forwards set too hot a pace for the Selwyn halves, who were given no time for fancy stick work. Early in the second spell Trinity led by three goals, scored by Wales (2) and Brown. The team eased up and Selwyn battling hard, got its first goal when a melee in Trinity’s goalmouth enabled Bowden to score. Selwyn redoubled its efforts to secure a penalty corner, from which T. Burtt netted and the game ended with the score: Trinity 3, Selwyn 2. UNIVERSITY v. AIR FORCE

Improved by the leadership of A. Norman in the ' forwards, Air Force held University to a draw, two goals each. The game was even throughout, and though University had slightly the better combination it lacked scoring, ability. Air Force scored first, after a fruitless penalty bully in its circle, and Budd netted after a fast passing raid the length of the field. University equalised when Eggleton scored from a penalty comer. University obtained the lead soon after halftime when Eggleton goaled from a scramble. Air Force persisted, and shortly before time Lawson equalised the scores again, and the game ended in a draw. Air ' Force 2, University 2. TECHNICAL v. BED CLIFFS A rough, bumpy ground spoilt' all chances 'of good hockey at Ensor’s Road, where Technical won a bustling game against Redcliffs. Redcliffs held the advantage three parts through the game, and led by three goals well into the second spell Thomson (2) and Pragnell being responsible. Technical staged a great recovery in the closing stages of the game and Levey (2) and Cole (2)- registered, and the game ended with the score: Technical 4, Redcliffs 3. . LOWER GRADES
