Greene’s team at Hastings. This was the Defoe gelding’s first win, and although he suffered from wind trouble when trained in the south, he should carry on, as he possesses jumping ability. Small Field
Anglo-French will be ridden In the Great Western Steeplechase at Riverton on Saturday by T. J. Boyle, who has won the race on three occasions. AngloFrench and Noko will be bracketed in the race, and they will have two opponents only, La Boca and Shadow Boy. AngloFrench fellwwheyn y schooling with Boyle last week, and the rider received a severe shaking, but is expected to be able to ride on Saturday. Successor to Padishah
Jvar, owned and trained by Mr J. A. Hennah, owner ofVadishah, had his first] race as a hurdler at Hastings last Saturday, and in view of his form on the flat, | his effort was watched with interest. He went well for a good part of the journey, but being allowed to go into one fence i too slowly, he lost a lot of ground and drifted out. Ivar showed plenty of confidence after a long period of schooling, and he can be expected to make good. Incidentally Padishah's death was reported from Hastings last week at the age of 14 years. He was bred by Mr Hennah, and was the only horse ever to win the two Grand Nationals in the one year, while he twice won the Grand National Hurdles. Other successes included the Hawke's Bay Cup, Wellington Cup, and C.J.C.- Metropolitan Handicap. In all he won 11 races, and his stake earnings amounted to £6125. Unlucky Stable Of'lo horses he has had in active commission this year, F. W. Ellis, the Invercargill trainer, will have only one available to race at Riccarton—Carolyn. The others were Royal Lancer, Invulnerable, Nigger Lad, Heidelberg, Marquee, Gundagai, Branxholme, Jack o' Lantern, and Killarney. Macedoine's Mishap Mr C. E. Robertson, who manages the racing affairs in the Dominion for several owners resident in India, advises that the injury Macedoine received when she knuckled over recently during a track gallop is not so serious as was at first believed. The mare has been inspected by two veterinary surgeons, who both expressed the opinion that she would recover from the hurt if given a rest from racing, and she has been sent to Riverton to spell. Like all the other horses being held here for Indian owners, Macedoine will be raced as the opportunity offers till shipping to India can be secured.
