LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
SEVERAL APPOINTMENTS PENDING (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, April 5. Several appointments to the Legislative Council are pending, but it is understood that no definite decisions have been made -yet. It is possible that some women may be appointed for the first time to the Council this year under recent legislation. This has led. to discussion about the persons the Government may have in mind. Two names have been mentioned, those of Mrs M. M. Dreaver, a former member of Parliament for Waitemata, and Mrs T. Green, of Christchurch. It is believed that the Government will not confine the selection of new appointees to its own ranks, and a widely-held view is that of its opponents it could not make better choices than the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes and the Hon. Sir Apirana Ngata, both of whom have played long and notable parts in New Zealand Parliamentary history. Another man whose name has been discussed in the lobbies as a possible new councillor is Mr J. Roberts, president of the Labour- Party. He has been seen round Parliament Buildings a good deal more often than usual recently. If Mr Roberts is appointed he would be a likely choice for the new leader, although it is generally believed that councillors themselves would prefer the Hon. B. Martin.
