# RICCARTON SUB-GENTRE That the lives' of thousands of prisoners of war have been saved by the contents of Red Cross parcels was the opinion expressed by Mr J. H. Griffiths, who recently returned to Christchurch after having been a prisoner in Italy and escaping to Allied lines after Italy fell. He was addressing the annual meeting of the Riccarton Sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, held in the Riccarton Town Hall and attended by about 120 members, with Mrs John Montgomery presiding. ~.«.« ..„ The annual report summarised the activities of a busy year, during which 300 garments had been sent to the Red Cross depot, cakes had been provided for soldier patients in hospital, members had helped in the postmen's drive and other patriotic efforts, they had sent parcels to the sub-centre's adopted prisoner of war and had helped three orphan children. In addition they had taken a part in the billeting catering arrangements tfiT the?
