Mrs P. Fraser, wife of the Prime Minister, will accompany her husband on his forthcoming visit to England. Others in the party will be Mr A. D. Mclntosh, secretary of the War Cabinet, and secretary to the Department of External Affairs, and Miss K. G. Jordan, of Mr Fraser’s secretarial staff.
Miss Amy Kane, Mrs Knox Gilmer, and Miss Belle Cable will be candidates in the Wellington local bodies elections to be held next month.
The April meeting of the Cashmere Garden Club was held at Mrs C. J. M. Boyce’s home, Hackthorne road. Mrs E. L. King gave a talk on "Dahlias.” Tea hostesses were Mesdames Mitchell, Bunt, Lawrence, and Hardie. After 20 years of continuous service at the Auckland Infirmary, now the Green Lane Hospital, Sister A. V. Hamilton, in private life Mrs R. Leyland, is retiring from her profession. Throughout her period of service at the infirmary, she was closely connected with the nursing of tuberculosis.
That the nature of the activities of the New Zealand Institute for the Blind at Parnell had changed remarkably was reported by the director, Mr J. E. Broadfoot, at the annual meeting this week. Basket-making, seagrass and cane furniture-miakine had, during the war, been replaced by essential war contracts. These included the manufacture of ships’ fenders, hammocks, landing nets, and special furniture. Sales amounted to about £27,000. A total of £6700, it was reported, had been bequeathed to the institute during the year ended March 31. This sum comprised 26 legacies and part-legacies. Miss M. Bohan, who retired last week fror the Post and Telegraph Department, has ueen entertained at many farewell gatherings by her friends and fellow-workers. Amongst the pleasantest of these, was a party given by suburban postmistresses and their friends and held at the home of Miss L. G. Rigby, who, herself, retired last year from the position of postmistress at Addington. The guests joined in wishing Miss Bohan good health and happiness in her retirement; She will leave to-day to spend a few months at the family home at Leeston and later will take up residence in Christchurch.
Nine patients from the Christchurch Hospital were sent to the Rhodes Convalescent Home last month by the Hospital Lady Visitors’ Association, and a sale organised by two members of the association—Mrs S. H. Stewart and Mrs P. R. Climie—realised the sum of £7O 12s to be used for the upkeep of the Adeline Turner Rest Cottage at Sumner. These facts were reported at the monthly meeting of the association, held this week at the Christchurch Hospital. Miss E. Cardale presided. Mrs Percy Cox reported that the library had been busy and that gifts of magazines had been received from a gratefu patient, Mesdames Kemp, WynnWilliams, A. Brown, J. Anderson, Percy V/right, Miss Baker, and books from Miss Elliot.

It was reported that fortnightly dances were held by the branch to entertain nearby servicemen. Competition results were as follows: single bloom: Mrs Collison 1, Mrs Lynn 2; vase of flowers: Mrs Mehr.tens 1, Mrs Collison 2; egg-cup, Mrs Collison 1, Mrs Hayton 2; raspberry jam: Mrs Preece I, Mrs Moore 2. Mrs Johnston, president of the Avonhead branch, was welcomed and took the chair for the election of officers, which resulted as follows:—president, Mrs M. Orchard; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. Seymour and W. Hayton; secretary and treasurer, Mrs G. Montgomery; advisory members, president and Mrs F. Claridge; committee, Mesdames W. Lynn, G. Collison, G. Moore; delegates to provincial executive, the president, Mesdames E. Smith and W. Webb.
